Artist Statement

"Mont Helena"
 "Paint what you know."

Artists have shared this bit of advice from mentor to student, and it was given to me years ago. I have always kept the words in mind when selecting subjects for my paintings. I know the Mississippi Delta both as a landscape and as a personality, having spent much of my childhood exploring the highways, farmland, lakesides, and creekbeds. Along with visits to familiar places, I also paint still life venues of familiar items to preserve a personal history. In my work I strive to convey the passion and sentimentality I feel toward these places and objects that have and are so much a part of my life.
